12,500 miles of network open. And still growing.

Sustrans believes that the problems of motor traffic should be tackled at a global level.” We work with experts in Europe and Worldwide, learning from their expertise and sharing our own”. Over 500 governments and professional contacts overseas now subscribe to Sustrans technical publications on cycle planning and safe routes to schools, and the National Cycle Network guidelines have helped in planning technical standards for several countries.

The 6000km North Sea Cycle Route is now open. The route passes through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, then follows Route 1 and 65 of the National Cycle Network along the east coast between Harwich and Lerwick.

Watch out for “B2Y” A new bach-to-beach route between Barmouth and Yarmouth to rival C2C.

Route 54. Lichfield to Derby
The 'glow worm' site at Mickleover has been resurfaced for cycling by Derby City Council. The councils are also considering creating more access points in Mickleover so local users of the railway path can avoid Station Road. A temporary crossing of the brook at the north end of Darley Fields has been installed after the failure of the access road bridge.

54. The section between Alrewas and Wychnor remains as a footway only, pending further negotiations with the Highways Agency, who are concerned about safety.

In Burton, the alternative route from Clay Mills to the Horninglow Linear Park has been constructed to avoid busier roads in Stretton.

63. In The National Forest, is to extend from Leicester to Burton on Trent where it will run into town on the wonderful Stapenhill Viaduct. Current negotiations are crystallising a route, between the existing Ashby Woulds Trail, via Conkers to Swadlincote. Grateful thanks to Richard Groves of South Derbyshire District Council.

5. Stoke
Most of the highway section of the route from the railway station, past the University into Hanley town centre is complete, and a large section of the canal towpath to the south of Stoke has been resurfaced. North of Hanley, the Central Forest section of the route to Sneyd Street is now open. Completion of the Greenways northward is planned for 2003 funding permitting.

5. Walsall - Brownhills - Chasewater - Burntwood
Major changes have taken place around Burntwood because of the new bypass with construction of two new Cycle/walking over bridges at
Chasetown

5. Goscote to Brownhills A major project is being planned to realign route 5 along the old railway formation between Mill Lane Park, Walsall, and the new health centre at Brownhills. Included will be a new link to Clay Hanger and better access to Brownhills,  also improved  links to the canal network.

5. Staffordshire
The Trent and Mersey Canal towpath has been resurfaced between Kidsgrove and Rode Heath. In Stafford, the route between the A513 at Walton on the Hill and Fairway is now complete. Changes at the A34 roundabout at Parkside will accommodate Route 5 to the west.

68. The Pennine Cycleway from Etwell via Ashbourne for the Tissington Trail and on to Berwick on Tweed. (Off route 54 Burton North).

81. Shrewsbury to Wellington

Stafford. Isabel Trail from near Stafford Station to the RAF base has now received a tarmac surface.

Aldridge Link

Canal towing path has been upgraded between Chasewater Dam and Aldridge.

From the Dam, follow NCN route 5 towards Brownhills, but at Burntwood road bridge stay on canal to Ogley Junction. (nr Grasmere gardens. Food available), Turn right over Iron foot bridge and continue to Anchor bridge and Cats Hill Junction. Here you can turn left for Walsall Wood and Aldridge. Turning right will take you to Brownhills, (take care over green foot bridge), or continue to rejoin the National Cycle Network route 5, for Pelsall and Walsall.

Canal Towing Paths

We do keep an eye on our local Canal towing Paths. The list below is quite important to us locally.

Anglesey Branch Canal . From start at Chasewater Dam to Catshill Junction, Brownhills Short section is NCN5. (West Mid / Staffordshire boarder)

Daw End Canal, Catshill junction to Aldridge. Is an excellent link to Aldridge West Mid. and should be signed into NCN5. (I keep talking to Walsall Council). All in West Midlands.

Wyrley and Essington Canal. From York's foundry bridge, Pelsall, to Catshill Junction, Brownhills. A section of NCN 5 runs along the towing path. All in West Midlands. All the above have been upgraded to dual use, cycling and walking.
