Chasewater  Country Park

Staffordshire - West Midlands  WS8 7

Chasewater Country Park is the greatest asset the area has to offer,  with it's Lakes, woods and heath land . Being mostly flat makes it easy going for both walking and cycling. The National cycle Network route 5 passes through the Park. With easy access from Birmingham City centre and Walsall by route 5 or canal, traffic free all the way.

From Wolverhampton along the canal  to Chasewater dam.  From Lichfield by NCN route 5, and  from Aldridge along the canal to the dam.  There are also long distance footpaths, including the Beacon Way, linking into Chasewater's  own footpaths and cycle way

Chasewater  will hopefully be linked by National cycle Network route 5 to Cannock Chase in the near future. Most of the route will be traffic free. Planning consent has been obtained by sustrans for 50% of the route.

When complete the new "Green Way" will link together Chasewater Country Park with  Gentleshaw Common and Cannock Chase.

The New Gates and Fencing around areas of the Park

Fencing at Chasewater Country Park

Lichfield District Council manages large areas of heathland at Chasewater Country Park. This is a huge task, and one that can be achieved more efficiently by grazing animals. We have been successfully grazing heathland at the Anglesey Basin area for two years now, using hardy Dexter cattle that are ideally suited for the job.

Thanks to a successful bid for Higher Level Scheme funding from Natural England, cows will be introduced onto more areas of the Country Park to help manage the important heathland habitat. This means the North Shore area has been fenced off, ready to introduce cattle in 2009.

We want the area to remain as accessible as possible, as the gates and fencing is to keep the cattle in, not the people out. We have installed specially designed gates that will allow walkers, cyclists and horse riders to use the area as normal. This includes two gates across the cycle track near the Chasewater Heaths railway station. To find out more about the gates, please visit www.centrewire.com While this is a big change to the area, we hope everyone will support the grazing project and adjust to the gates over time.

If you have any queries about the fencing work or to let us know any problems, please contact

Justine Lloyd, Countryside Officer, on 01543 308164.
